LINE LEARNER / IPHONE

Line learner app for actors

Scriptmate is the line learner that reads every other character out loud and waits for you to say your line. Import your sides, tap your character, and learn lines by running the scene instead of staring at the page.

HOW IT WORKS

HOW TO LEARN LINES WITH SCRIPTMATE

  1. Importing a PDF script into Scriptmate, the parsed pages ready to confirm

    01

    Import your sides

Open a PDF, or scan paper pages with the document scanner. Split a full script into scenes and rehearse only the one you need.

  2. The characters in a scene, each with its own reader voice

    02

    Tap your character

Your lines are marked automatically, and every other role gets its own voice.

  3. A scene running in Scriptmate, the reader listening for the actor's line

    03

    Run it out loud

Say your line and the reader answers the moment you finish. Go again until you no longer need the page.

THE METHOD

WHY A LINE LEARNER BEATS READING THE PAGE

In a scene, your line is set off by the end of someone else's. That link is what a line learner trains: the other part is spoken, then everything waits until you come in. Reading a script silently teaches you what the page looks like. Running it out loud against a cue teaches you what to say next, which is the only part anyone hears.

Keep the runs short, spread them over a few days rather than one long sitting, and say every line at full voice. When a line keeps slipping, run the cue before it a few times on its own, then play the whole scene again.

WHAT IT DOES

BUILT FOR LEARNING LINES

  • Word by word cue detection

The reader follows your whole line, not just its last word, so it keeps up when you paraphrase, restart or stop to find a word. Off book or reading, the next line comes when you finish.

  • Your voice or the app's

Every other role reads in its own voice: natural voices made on your iPhone for English scripts, the iPhone's own voices for other languages. Long press any line to record it yourself, or record a whole character in one sitting, and one switch turns your takes on or off.

  • Paper sides welcome

The document scanner finds the edges of a printed page and straightens it, across as many pages as the scene runs. Photos of sides work too.

  • Focus mode

Choose the apps that pull you away. Scriptmate blocks them while you rehearse and unblocks them when you stop.

SELF-TAPE

OFF BOOK? TAPE IT IN THE SAME APP

When the scene sticks, record the self-tape without leaving Scriptmate. Reader lines play only in your headphones, so the camera mic never hears them. Recording is locked to landscape, and your own lines are hidden while you record, so you play the scene instead of reading it.

Two other apps carry the name. They come from different makers and work differently from Scriptmate and from each other. We make Scriptmate, so weigh this with that in mind: every cell below comes from the app's own US App Store listing on 30 September 2026.

  • You learn by ear and rehearse on an iPad: LineLearner. You record the scene once and it plays back with gaps for your lines, for a one time price.
  • Your scripts arrive as Fountain or Final Draft files: Line Learner AI imports both.
  • You want the reader to wait for you, and you self-tape: Scriptmate. It listens to the whole line, and the tape is recorded in the same app with the reader off the microphone.

WHAT ACTORS SAY

4.1 out of 5 on the App Store

  • “I drop my screenplay in, and a second later I'm running lines. That's pretty much it. No setup, no fiddling, no fifty menus to dig through.”

    rusty.m. App Store review

  • “Importing screenplay PDFs is really straightforward, and the app doesn't try to do too much. It stays focused on what matters. I've been using it to rehearse with my movie sides and it's made the process so much easier.”

QUESTIONS

What is a line learner app?

A line learner app plays the other characters in a script so you can learn your lines by saying them out loud against a cue. Some play back recordings you make yourself, some read on a timer, and some listen to you and answer when you finish. Scriptmate is the last kind, on iPhone.

How do I learn my lines with Scriptmate?

Import the script as a PDF or scan the paper pages, tap your character, and start the scene. Scriptmate reads every other part and waits for you to say each of your lines before it goes on. Run the scene out loud in short sessions across a few days until you no longer need the page.

Does Scriptmate wait for me to finish my line?

Yes. It follows your speech word by word through the whole line, not only the last word, so the next line plays when you finish, even if you paraphrase or restart. The timing stays yours, which is the part that carries over to an audition room.

Can I record the other parts in my own voice?

Yes. Long press any reader line to record it, or record a whole character in one sitting with the line before each one shown as a cue. Rehearsal then plays your take instead of the synthetic voice, and one switch turns your recordings off again without deleting them.

Is Scriptmate the same app as LineLearner?

No. LineLearner is a separate iPad app, sold for $3.99, where you record the scene yourself and playback leaves gaps for your lines. Scriptmate is an iPhone app that voices the other parts for you, or plays your own recordings, and listens for your line instead of leaving a gap.

Is Scriptmate the same app as Line Learner AI?

No. Line Learner AI is a different iPhone app from a different developer, with AI voices for each character. Scriptmate reads English scripts in natural voices made on your iPhone and other languages in the iPhone's own voices, imports photos and scans of paper sides, lets you record any line in your own voice, and records the self-tape in the same app with the reader in your headphones.

Is there a free version?

A full demo scene runs the moment you open the app, with no account. Your own scripts are free for seven days, then Scriptmate Pro is $69.99 a year or $9.99 a month. Cancel in your App Store account settings before the trial ends and you are not charged.

Does it work on iPad or Android?

Not yet. Scriptmate is an iPhone app and needs iOS 16 or later. If you are on Android, our comparison of six rehearsal apps names the ones that run there.
