5 Rehearsal Pro alternatives for actors in 2026

Scriptmate reads the other parts out loud and waits for your cue. Free for seven days on iPhone. Get it on the App Store
Rehearsal Pro has been the working actor’s app for over a decade, and its model is simple: you record every line except your own, then the app plays your recording back while the script scrolls, until you are off book. At about $19.99 one time it is the best deal in the category. Actors look for an alternative for one of three reasons: they do not want to record the whole scene before rehearsing it, they want a reader that listens and answers on cue rather than playing back on a timer, or they want to record the self-tape in the same app. The five below cover all three. We make the first one, so read that entry with the disclosure in mind. The full comparison has the six app table and the pricing detail.
1. Scriptmate
Ours. Import a PDF or photos of paper sides, tap your character, and every other role reads in its own voice: natural voices made on the iPhone for English scripts, the built in voices for other languages. The reader follows your speech word by word and answers when you finish, so it keeps up whether you are off book, paraphrasing or cold reading. The self-tape is built in: landscape enforced, your lines hidden, and the reader’s lines playing only through your headphones so the microphone never hears them. No account. iPhone only, $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year after a 7 day trial. The honest con against Rehearsal Pro is the subscription: there is no one time price. Head to head: Scriptmate vs Rehearsal Pro.
2. coldRead
The pick we recommend most often after our own, and the one Backstage put first. coldRead keeps Rehearsal Pro’s idea of recording the other lines yourself, transcribed as you record, and adds a reader that listens: it waits for the cue word at the end of your line, then plays the next one. It runs on device with no account, on iPhone, iPad and Apple silicon Macs, with an Apple Watch remote. Free up to 8 lines per scene, then a subscription. The trade offs: you still record every other line first, cue detection keys on the last word rather than the whole line, and on a self-tape the reader plays from the speaker, so it is on the recording. If you want to keep Rehearsal Pro’s iPad support and add a reader that listens, this is the one. Head to head: Scriptmate vs coldRead.
3. blablabla
The strongest voice catalog in the category, 90 plus AI voices across 70 plus languages, with speech detection so the reader waits for you, and a full self-tape mode in which the reader cues you silently on screen through a teleprompter. Two scenes free, then $6.99 a month or $69.99 a year. An Android version is in beta, which makes it one of the few real options if you are leaving Rehearsal Pro because you are leaving iOS. Voice generation needs an internet connection first. Head to head: Scriptmate vs blablabla.
4. Acting Pal
AI voices and speech detection on both iOS and Android, plus the one feature nobody else has: a community of live human readers you can connect with when a scene needs a real person on the other end. Teleprompter mode for taping. $9.99 a month with a 3 day trial. Import is PDF only, and its conversational reading can drift from the exact scripted line, which matters when precision is the point.
5. Offbook
Web only, which is the point if you rehearse at a desk. Voice cloning so the reader can sound like a specific person, and an AI script analysis feature that breaks down beats and objectives. $9.99 to $29.99 a month with a 7 day trial and a 50 percent student discount. No offline use, and we could not confirm real cue detection from its materials, so test that in the trial.
Which one to get
- You want a reader that listens, and you self-tape. Scriptmate.
- You want to try cue detection for free, or you need iPad or Mac. coldRead.
- You are moving to Android. Acting Pal today, blablabla if a beta is fine.
- You sometimes need a human reader. Acting Pal.
- You rehearse in a browser. Offbook.
If the reason you are leaving is the timing, not the price, the background is in apps that read lines with you, which explains why playback and cue detection train different things.
Questions
- What is the best alternative to Rehearsal Pro?
- It depends on what you want that Rehearsal Pro does not do. For a reader that listens for your cue and records the self-tape, Scriptmate. For a free way to try cue detection on iPhone, iPad or Mac, coldRead. For Android, blablabla or Acting Pal.
- Is there a free alternative to Rehearsal Pro?
- coldRead is free up to 8 lines per scene, and blablabla is free for two scenes. Neither is a one time purchase like Rehearsal Pro. Scriptmate has a 7 day trial with everything unlocked.
- Which alternatives do not make me record the other lines myself?
- Four of the five. Scriptmate reads the other parts in a voice per character, natural voices made on the iPhone for English scripts and the built in voices for other languages, and blablabla, Acting Pal and Offbook generate AI voices. coldRead, like Rehearsal Pro, plays recordings you make, but it listens for your cue.
- Which alternatives can record a self-tape?
- Scriptmate, blablabla and coldRead record the tape in the same app, and Scriptmate keeps the reader in your headphones and off the recording. Acting Pal has a teleprompter mode. Offbook is rehearsal only.
